HOUSEKEEPING/CEU’s
A few housekeeping notes regarding CEU’s. The Community Forum was not listed as a workshop under RID. It was a separate event so it will not be in the program book. You should have filled out the CEU form at the table outside the Barcelona 2 room. If not, it is too late.
If you attended the IDP Pre-Conference workshop, "Indigenous Interpreters in the Classroom" PINRA forms were available for that, again if you did not fill them out during the event it is too late.
Debbie Swamback from NYC is handling all the CEU paperwork for us. She asks you all to be patient and give time for the National office to catch up. If you do not see the CEU’s reflected in your transcript by NOVEMBER, contact her at bluemoonhands@aol.com
CODA IDP DINNER
We had over 150 people show up to a raucous dinner at a local Italian restaurant. I can’t thank Sherry Hicks and Michael Velez enough for pulling this off! Michael inspired me to awaken my “organizing” gene, he did nothing but collect money and cross off names in his big black book all night! And Miss Sherry got the booties shakin’ interpreting music! We were honored with the presence of those who started CODA and IDP, Millie Brother, Sheila Jacobs, Gary Sanderson among a few…. I brought my son, a goda and he laughed through the whole night amazed that this is part of his heritage. I must say we do bring a lot of laughter and passion to the world. Thank you all for that!
IDP PRE-CONFERENCE –
Indigenous Interpreters In the Classroom
Well, 15 people pre-registered and over 50 showed up! Many IDP members have requested an IDP skills based workshop and also have wanted to explore what makes the coda experience different in ITP’s. As an experiment we tried to merge these two ideas into one workshop.
Jason Norman, Sherry Hicks and Lynnette Taylor stepped in at the last minute to fill in for Betty Colonomos and did a workshop that simulated an ITP classroom, while at the same time using it as a fishbowl exercise. With Sherry’s guidance we told ABC stories and learned the principles of ASL storytelling, with Jason’s instruction we enacted scenes from the movie Eragon, applying the ASL principles he introduced: surrogate space, classifiers and blending features. We were all flying by this time. Lynnette took the visual literacy skills that were introduced and applied it to interpreting a segment of The Odyssey.
What are the differences when we come together in a learning environment? Do we have different learning styles? All of these questions were explored through hands on exercises and “think alouds” as well as “feel alouds”. ( A technique I picked up from Rico Peterson) So while the room was rather small it was intimate and full of laughter and learning.
Power Points will be disseminated soon. Sherry Hicks is working on that. If you want a copy of the PP presentation you need to send an email to Sherry Hicks at Sherrythe1@aol.com
I want to thank Debbie Woodroof for keeping the room together and making sure we all got what we needed! I also want to thank Laurie Nash and Debbie for keeping track of the PINRA forms and CEU’s that we all so desperately need.
IDP POW WOW
This was a time to reflect on the experiences of the pre-conference as well as discuss the issues that have come up over the past two years. The noted rise in anti-coda sentiment, the marginalization of indigenous interpreters in the field and the current trend in the field of interpreter training as well as interpreting, to mold itself for L2 learners of ASL rather than setting the standard for native fluency. Strategies and plans were discussed during this session. A committee stayed after the meeting to draft motions for the business meeting. I want to thank:
Richard Prather, Indiana
Kim Kischer-Larson, Iowa
Debbie Woodruff, Arkansas
Sherry Hicks, California
Steve Toth, New Jersey
Simon Martinez, New Jersey
Karlene Kischer-Browne, Iowa
COMMUNITY FORUM
"What is our IQ? (Impact Quotient)"
WOW!!! What an amazing event. I can’t thank everyone enough for showing your support, for helping out by giving donations, by being there, by reminding RID that this was a community organization and it needs to return to that value as its center.
There were over 360 people who attended and more than 75 turned away. Some waited for over an hour in the hallway hoping to get in. I must THANK the two women who “whoa! manned” the door, Beth Prevor and Debbie Swamback. They took quite a bit of heat from people and there were moments during the panel when the doors were rattling with people trying to get in.
All of this just shows that there are many of us who care very deeply about the relationship between interpreters and the Deaf community. People want to come together and explore these issues and our relationships and as you know, it won’t always be easy but it will be far healthier for all of us if we move together allowing the needs and values of the Deaf community to guide our practices instead of a sterile professional model based on Hearing (I have decided to capitalize H to reflect “profoundly hearing”, to coin Gary Sanderson’s phrase) corporate values.
Many board members were present and I thank them for coming: Angela Jones, Bruce King, Cheryl Moose, Glendia Boon; there may be more that I am missing, if so, forgive me. Thank you for your support and willingness to come. All of the board members had other commitments and were unable to stay through the whole event but Cheryl Moose decided to stay through the whole thing. She has offered to provide space from RID to continue these forums at each regional conference! Thank you!
The collaboration between Deaf Members in Leadership, Interpreters with Deaf Parents , Deaf Caucus and Interpreters for the Deaf Blind was a great experience leading to a stronger support base and recognition of shared concerns.
Of course, there were many people involved in making this happen. I have had lengthy phone conversations with many of you over these past two years that helped shape the direction and focus of this forum. Let’s make sure it continues with real community collaboration.
I want to thank from the bottom of my heart the panelists, all of us were very nervous about opening this discussion, knowing that there are a lot of strong feelings out there so I thank you for your commitment and courage.

I spent many hours of conversation with Betty Colonomos, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer and was unable to participate because she had to undergo treatment. Her experience and words of wisdom helped shape this conversation.
While not there physically, in spirit, she was right with us.
SMALL GROUP FACILITATORS
Thanks for coming early, for pitching in and also taking the challenge to run a group. All of us were unsure of this terrain and again, I love the spirit of our community to improvise, get in there and be willing to explore. Your discussions will inform the next steps in follow up actions.

FOLLOW UP TO THE FORUM:
- Forums at each regional conference with the objective of working closely with each local NAD affiliate chapter and local Deaf organizations
- More outreach into diverse populations
- Notes are compiled from each of the small groups and will be synthesized and presented to the board as recommendations.
- DVD of the panel discussion will be duplicated with the assistance of Northeastern University and distributed free of charge to all Interpreter Education Programs in the country. We are looking for funding to do the same for each affililiate chapter of NAD.
- From the discussion and notes we will begin to draft a new mission and philosophy statement for RID. One that reflects cultural and community values.
The main message that came from the forum was, RID needs to stop and listen to the Deaf community. Eileen Forestal said it eloquently when she said, “RID you need to drop your defensive posture and open yourselves up to listen. Just listen to us (the Deaf community) for a while.”
David Eberwein expressed the sentiments of many in the room when he said RID needs to just STOP, put the brakes on, slow down before you make anymore decisions that impact the Deaf community. About the EIPA he said, “ Put a halt on it. Wait and talk with the Deaf community before you move ahead on this.”
Lillian Garcia and Eileen Forestal both expressed feelings that they were tired of being second class citizens at RID, the token Deafies in an organization that serves the Deaf community.
We all know there is no going back - mainstream education is now a fact of life but there may be better, healthier ways to think about how it can work. While I applaud the idea that there are standards being designed for the interpreter in the classroom, I think we are looking at this thing too narrowly. How can the Deaf community be more involved? It is after all their future - our livelihood yes, but THEIR future.
If RID is now making its place in Deaf education by recognizing the EIPA then doesn’t it also have a responsibility to now advocate for a better education system? Perhaps RID should be advocating for regional centers with schools for the Deaf providing oversight to the local mainstream schools, working with and monitoring the classroom interpreters. Providing trained CDI’s as well as a classroom interpreter with the deaf schools as additional support. I am not sure what the answer is, I just know we are thinking about it too microscopically and we need time to talk and talk and think and think with all of our community members before committing to a plan.
So, all of this leads me to say let’s welcome the hard discussions and be brave enough to forge a new direction.
CLOSING COMMENTS
It has been a pleasure to serve as chair of IDP over these past two years. I thank you for that opportunity and I will continue to work with the current board and follow up on the community forum activity. Lest I forget, don’t forget we did pass a motion at CIT to establish a committee of IDP interpreter trainers to act as a liaison to the CIT board. Anyone who is interested should contact me or Ron O’Bray.
A pleasure to work with Sherry Hicks, who can round up a group of codas faster than one can say “spit”. Her networking skills were an invaluable asset.
I welcome IDP’s new council, Ron O’Bray- chair, Laurie Nash- vice chair and Keith Wann, secretary/treasurer. Laurie Nash has been working closely with me over the past year and brings unlimited energy, intelligence and commitment to IDP. It has been a gift to work with her. I look forward to the next steps in IDP’s future.
I want to extend a WHOLEHEARTED THANK YOU to Stephanie Feyne who graciously offered to act as our webmaster these past two years. She not only set up this site but also the google group. (and she is not a coda)

This year at the RID conference there will be lots of opportunities for us to
meet, greet and share ideas about the future direction of IDP and RID. As you
can see from the following events we have been busy trying to respond to the
needs of our community. In order to make these successful we need your help!
Please contact us if you are sincere in your wish to volunteer.
Please look for these events:
IDP PRE-CONFERENCE :
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 4-9 pm & FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 8-3 pm
BETTY COLONOMOS will present a two day workshop designed for interpreters
with deaf parents. Members have been asking for a skills related workshop
geared for us. Here it is!
(This event is open to hearing and deaf
interpreters with deaf parents.)(Click here for registration info)
IDP POW WOW:
AUGUST 3, 3:30-5:30
Following the Pre-conference will be an
informal gathering of IDP members to get acquainted with some of the issues
that the council has been trying to address over the past two years. It is
also an opportunity to meet and mingle before the conference begins.
IDP SPONSORED FORUM:
SATURDAY AUGUST 4, 1-6 pm
Examining RID's shifting
position within the Deaf Community. IDP has been working closely with DML
over the past two years to organize this community event. Perhaps we should
call it Ball State revisited, as it is a look at our history and an
examination of where we are going as a profession. Without an understanding
of our historical context we can make decisions that are unintentionally
harmful. These decisions have a profound impact on the Deaf community yet
often they are not part of the decision making process. This forum is an
opportunity to engage in an informed dialogue with the Deaf community and
members of the interpreting profession to examine our history and RID's
shifting position within the Deaf community. With so many pressures
threatening the Deaf community's survival it is time we all come to the
table to look at how we can work together to support the Deaf community. Are
we creating a future to our liking? Do we share the same vision? Do we share
the same concerns? Can we come together to shape the direction of the
interpreting profession, the direction of RID and rekindle its relationship
with the Deaf community? The only way to do this is to start the conversation
and look at the issues. This is the first of what I hope will be many
community forums to come.
This panel/Forum discussion is open to everyone. In order to make it an open
invitation to the Deaf community and other community members we are holding
it off site and independent of RID, at the nearby Parc 55 hotel, so that it
will be free to those who wish to participate. This panel is FREE OF CHARGE.Panelists include:

2007 Updates
GREETINGS!
The IDP Board eagerly anticipates seeing each of you at the RID Conference in San Francisco! We deeply appreciate your interest, your enthusiastic inquiries about IDP activities during the RID 2007 National Conference in San Francisco! This brief e-mail is an attempt to give you an update of our activities. The IDP Board continues planning events for the upcoming 2007 National RID conference in San Francisco. Our goals were to: Plan a Pre-Conference, Sponsor an all day track workshop during the main calendar of events for the RID Conference, organize a CODA/IDP dinner and we are working on organizing a panel to address the current politics in the field of interpreting and the Deaf community. We thank you for your support. Please plan on attending what promises to be a very stimulating pre-conference.
A LOOK BACK:
IDP’s gathering, at the RID National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, 2005, boasts record attendance! The IDP membership voted, Lynnette Taylor-Chair, Debbie Woodroof-Vice Chair, and Sherry Hicks-Treasurer/Secretary, the new slate of IDP officers, 2005-2007. The IDP Board graciously accepted IDP’s charge to:
(1) Safeguard IDP’s unique standing within the RID general membership,
(2) Attend to the professional development needs of IDP’s
(3) Plan/coordinate the RID, 2007 IDP Pre-Conference, in San Francisco
(4) Network with other organizations making IDP a more visible resource.
TRANSITION TO MEMBER SECTIONS:
IDP completed the submission for Member Section prior to the deadline. The MS application goes before the national board for a vote of approval the first week of March. This was a long and convoluted process but it is my understanding that we are in fine shape. Thanks go to Bruce King for all his help addressing our concerns.
REGIONAL CONFERENCES:
For the first time IDP held meetings at each of the regional conferences. Thanks go to the facilitators of those meetings, Rachel Payne, Brandon Arthur, Lewis Merkin, Laurie Nash, Alan Champion. There were some last minute replacements of facilitators so I appreciate those of you who were willing to step in and help out. Bruce King needs a special plaque for attending a record number of regional IDP meetings! If I have overlooked anyone please forgive me and send me an e-mail giving me a comeuppance as well as a reminder:)
IDP AT CIT
IDP had another historic first it held a meeting in San Diego during the CIT conference. I hope it sets a precedent. After a passionate (what else can we expect from our group) and well attended meeting we identified many issues we wanted to address.
Sherry Hicks and Lynnette Taylor made a motion to establish a CIT advisory committee of interpreter trainers with deaf parents. The purview and responsibilities of this committee, as well as its members, are not yet defined but the idea is initially it will function in an advisory capacity. We will keep you informed as things get more defined.
What was glaring at CIT was our absence. Interpreters with deaf parents and Deaf people were the founders and leaders in the field of interpreting and interpreter education. We are now strangers in a field we began. Not only were we absent, meaning there was no recognition of CODA or IDP, while there was formal recognition of other organizations such as NAOBI and MANO y MANO but presenters and conference attendees alike made many anti-coda remarks that sadly reflect our current position within this field.
What hurt the most was, during the IDP meeting when all these issues were raised, a few members who are old timers said, “what’s new.” And a younger member said, is this just going to be a bitching session or are we going to do something about it?
So, we decided to do something about it. We made a motion to establish the IDP/IE committee. We will need help to make this committee take shape. If any of you are interested and have concrete suggestions please contact me.
PROPOSAL: IDP Board has proposed Shelia Jacobs’ Double Pride and Armand Volka’s Playback Theatre, for a workshop entitled “Crossing the borders, wrapping the wounds: An intercultural exploration of who we are and how we fit in the Deaf and interpreting communities,” as a track option for the RID 2007 Conference. We felt this met the mission of IDP to be more visible within RID and also to bring to the larger community a workshop that addresses all the intercultural aspects of our community. We need to revisit our community relationships especially at a time when the interpreting body is comprised of more interpreters who are not as familiar with the community and its cultural and identity politic. At this moment we are still waiting for confirmation of acceptance. An announcement will follow when we have formal acknowledgement that it has been accepted as a presentation. Please keep your eyes open and plan on attending this first time ever IDP sponsored track workshop.
PRECONFERENCE
Our pre-conference plans are under way! BETTY COLONOMOS will lead an all day workshop specifically geared for IDP members, both hearing and Deaf. Many members have asked for professional development opportunities that meet the needs of IDP members. Betty is one of the finest interpreter educators in the country and we will have the opportunity to have her for a full day! Please plan on attending this all day pre-conference on Thursday August 2, & Friday August 3, 2007.
TIMELINE: •(12/2006) The 2007 time slot for the Pre-Conference confirmed. The IDP Pre-Conference Workshop proposal was submitted-prior to the RID deadline, meeting space requested and approved. PLEASE hold Friday August 3, for the IDP pre-conference.
URGENT: WE NEED REPRESENTATION ON THE BOARD. DEADLINES FOR SUBMISSION OF NOMINATIONS TO RUN FOR OFFICE ARE APRIL 1ST.
For the first time in 13 years there will be no representation from either a Deaf person or a person who has deaf parents. It is critical that we are represented. Please consider running for office. Please urge anyone who you think would make a good candidate to run. The deadline is APRIL 1st!(Yikes! we are late…Pls apply now… Ed.)

Greetings,
With summer
encroaching and the Regional conferences underway, I wanted to take a
moment to give you an update on IDP activities.First, I apologize
for the sporadic and brief communication. Just after the San Antonio conference
my mother was diagnosed with lymphoma, her treatments and care have been
taking much of my time. Though communication has been sparse, activity
has not. Although it
has been a while since the national conference in San Antonio, I don't
want to lose those memorable moments. Not only were we inspired and entertained
by Alan Champion's keynote address during the well attended ( 150+
) IDP pre- conference, we also explored those bristling perplexities that
we encounter on our path as bi-cultural professionals.
During the IDP/CODA
dinner, generously sponsored by Ron Obray of HOVRS, we had a surprise
visit by Lillian Beard, one of the
original founders of RID and a fellow interpreter with Deaf parents. Her
poignant reminiscence left a roomful of glistening eyes and many of us
revisiting the past and pondering the future direction of interpreting.
The face of
RID has certainly changed since its inception.
Membership has grown exponentially
and continues to do so as we include more sectors of the interpreting
field. As this "suburban sprawl" is occurring, I think it is
a good time for us to revisit our neighborhood and think about what we
wish to keep intact and what we would like to see changed. This transition
to Member Section can be a time of productive reflection and a time to
re-examine our goals. What do you want to see? Please let us know by participating
in the Regional meetings. If you can't make it to the regional meetings
feel free to express your ideas through the IDP yahoo group or contact
any of the regional representatives or the IDP council. (Our contact information
is listed on the bottom).
THIS RENEWAL
PERIOD IS THE LAST TIME YOU CAN PAY IDP MEMBERSHIP DUES.

nothing else, do it for the sake of history. You are more than welcome
to make a donation at any time :)

FUNDRAISING
COMMITTEE
This is the last time we can accrue revenue through membership dues. Given
that we must be entirely self- supporting with no in-kind support from
the national office, we have established a fundraising committee. Diana
Kautsky has volunteered to steer this committee. Do any of you have grant
writing skills, expertise or interest you can lend to this vital committee?
Without funds we won't have an IDP or those fabulous pre-conferences we
have been enjoying all these years!
WEBSITE
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Stephanie Feyne has graciously offered her webmaster skills to set up
an IDP website. Our new address is IDP-RID.ORG check in around mid June
and we should be operative. Please send us suggestions for what you want
to see on the site. I hope this will be an easier way for members to find
us and a more efficient way to keep members informed.
SIG to MEMBER
SECTION TRANSITION
As I have said, this membership renewal period is the last time we can
pay dues to IDP. After this all revenue will need to come from fundraising
efforts. Melissa Bowhay, Glenace Humphries, Bruce King and Cheryl Moose
and Glenace Humphries have been working hard to help the SIG chairs navigate
this Member Section transition. Someone from this committee will be present
and available at all the Regional conferences to address questions about
the changes. Once the details are finalized the application process will
begin.
SIG YAHOO GROUP
The chairs of all the SIGS have been meeting in this forum addressing
questions and concerns to the transition committee. Bruce has been tireless
in his response to our questions and prolific in his output of information.
THANK YOU!
OUTREACH
Tom Bull will represent IDP and CODA at the National Association of the
Deaf conference. Look for a report to follow in the next communication.
Sherry Hicks is our international recruiter :. If you have ideas about
what you would like to have happen in this area please contact us.
TALKING POINTS
for the regional conferences
What is the purpose of IDP ?
What issues are of importance to us as coda interpreters?
How do you see IDP addressing these issues?
How do you see IDP working with other Member Sections?
What is the most beneficial aspect of IDP ?
How can IDP be a resource to the national board?
How do you see our relationship with the national organization?
What issues are of the most concern that you would like IDP to address?
What direction do you wish RID would take?
SUGGESTIONS
from the CHAIR
" Restructure the terms for elected council members to include a
predecessor- chair and chair- elect. We lose institutional memory with
each successor. The time it takes to catch up is a waste of productive
time that could have been used elsewhere. I would suggest that we consider
having a chair and chair- elect so that when the term ends the transition
is more seamless.
" The new BA requirement for certification has a clause, " in
lieu of" academic credits it will recognize non academic experience.
I am concerned that many of our codas who, have vast cultural and linguistic
knowledge that cannot be learned in a classroom could go unrecognized
because we have not set up a mechanism for translating and recognizing
these more esoteric skills into credits. We need someone to look at what
sets of skills or linguistic/ cultural competencies/knowledge might get
overlooked and make suggestions for how to identify and convert them into
accreditation. Anyone interested in pursuing this? I would like to see
us take an active role in defining those skills and how they get recognized.
" Standing Committees - the following are suggested committees
with the exception of Fundraising, the Regional Conference Presence and
the Webpage which are new this year
o WEBPAGE-
update information for IDP
o OUTREACH- contact and recruit new IDP members
o FUNDRAISING
o REGIONAL CONFERENCE PRESENCE- coordinate and work in conjunction
with the fundraising committee and Chair to ensure IDP presence at the
regional conferences
o PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS- a coda "think tank" to discuss
current practices and our response(s) to positions in the field.
o SPEAKERS BUREAU- a resource of those who are IDP's and present
workshops addressing this perspective.
If you have
any thoughts, additions and or interest in being a part of these committees
please contact us.
