Interpreters with Deaf Parents

Rules of Operation


ARTICLE 1: NAME

The name of this Special Interest Group (SIG) shall be Interpreters with Deaf Parents of the RID, hereafter referred to as IDP.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the IDP SIG is to advocate for the needs and interests of RID members who are Interpreters and Transliterators of Deaf parent(s) and to strengthen the ties between all members and officers of the RID by open recognition of the bilingual and bicultural diversity of the RID membership. More specifically:

a. To promote awareness of the needs of interpreters with Deaf parents

b. To provide a forum for Interpreters and Transliterators with Deaf parents

c. To foster an understanding within the general membership of the unique experiences and contributions which IDP's bring to the field of Interpreting and Transliterating

d. To serve as a resource to the RID board, National office of the RID, committees, and the membership on affecting interpreters, IDP's, and the Deaf community.

e. To recommend programs, activities and policies to the membership, Board of Directors, and the National Office that serve the interests and meet the needs of IDP's

f. To provide a support group for interpreters with Deaf parents

g. To promote and review the development of position and free papers

h. To ensure the provision of the highest quality interpreting and transliterating services to Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals based upon our cultural heritage

i. To encourage and promote career opportunity awareness for individuals with Deaf parents


ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

SECTION 1: All members in good standing of RID who support the purpose and objectives of IDP shall be eligible for membership.

SECTION 2: Annual dues shall be assessed each member of the IDP SIG. The amount of such dues shall be fixed by the membership but shall not exceed twenty five percent (25%) of the dues each member pays to RID, Inc.

SECTION 3: Voting Rights: Each member of the IDP SIG shall be eligible to vote in all meetings and elections.

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS

SECTION 1: OFFICERS
The officers of the IDP shall be Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer.

SECTION 2: TERMS AND REQUIREMENTS OF OFFICERS
Officers shall be elected for a term of two years, to commence at the SIG Business Meeting to be held at the RID National Convention. Each officer shall have been a member of the RID and the IDP SIG for at least two years immediately prior to their election and maintain these memberships in good standing while in office.

SECTION 3: RESPONSIBILITIES OF OFFICERS
The Chair shall:
a. Serve as chair of all SIG and Council meetings
b. Appoint committees for the IDP SIG
c. Act as a liason between the IDP SIG and the RID Board of Directors;
d. Countersign IDP SIG checks;
e. Have other powers as assigned by the Board of RID or the IDP Council

The Vice Chair shall:
a. In the absence of the Chair, assume the duties of the Chair;
b. Assume the office of Chair for the duration of the term, should it become vacant;
c. Act as the liason between the Council of IDP and any committees established;
d. Have other powers and duties as assigned by the IDP Council

The Secretary/Treasurer shall:
a. Keep accurate and complete minutes of all IDP Council and general meetings
b. Forward minutes to the IDP council and the National Office of the RID within fifteen (15) days of a meeting;
c. Forward minutes of general meetings to the Council of IDP, the editor of the VIEWS, and to the RID Board of Directors;
d. Keep a full set of detailed books for IDP
e. Report the books at all general meetings
f. Make payment on bills within thirty (30) days of approval;
g. Countersign all checks in the absence of the Chair.

ARTICLE V: ELECTIONS

SECTION 1: ELECTIONS
Election of officers shall take place every two (2) years at the biennial convention of the RID, Inc.;

SECTION 2: NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICERS
Any member of the SIG in good standing of both the RID, Inc., and the IDP SIG may nominate individuals for office of IDP SIG. In addition to the slate received and/or developed by the Nominations Committee, nominations may also be made from the floor during the biennial business meeting.

ARTICLE VI: COUNCIL

SECTION 1: COMPOSITION OF THE COUNCIL
The IDP Council shall consist of three officers of IDP

SECTION 2: TERMS AND REQUIREMENTS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS
Council members shall be elected, according to Article V of these Rules of Operation, for a term of two years, to commence at the SIG Business Meeting to be held at the RID National Convention.

ARTICLE VII: MEETINGS

SECTION 1: Meetings of the full SIG shall be held during each national convention of the RID.

SECTION 2: The Council of IDP shall decide its meeting schedule during each RID convention.

SECTION 3: Council meetings may be face- to- face or by conference call

SECTION 4: Meetings shall be open to all members of RID

ARTICLE VIII: AMENDMENT OF THESE RULES OF OPERATION

SECTION 1: These rules of Operation may be amended by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the membership by mail or at a business meeting.

SECTION 2: All proposed amendments shall be received in written form by the chair ninety (90) days before voting occurs and by the members sixty (60) days prior to voting on them.

ARTICLE IX: DISSOLUTION OF THE SIG

Upon two-thirds (2/3) vote of the total membership, the SIG- Interpreters with Deaf Parents may be dissolved. All assets at the time of the dissolution of the IDP SIG shall revert to RID, Inc.
